Research peptide reconstitution & storage

A practical handling reference for laboratory researchers working with lyophilized peptides. For research use only — not for human consumption.

1. Bacteriostatic water ratios

Bacteriostatic water (BAC water) is sterile water preserved with 0.9% benzyl alcohol. It is the standard diluent for lyophilized peptides because the preservative keeps the reconstituted solution sterile for roughly 28 days at refrigeration temperatures.

Typical ratios used in research protocols:

  • 5 mg vial + 1 mL BAC water → 5 mg/mL
  • 10 mg vial + 2 mL BAC water → 5 mg/mL
  • 10 mg vial + 1 mL BAC water → 10 mg/mL (smaller draw volumes)

Inject the BAC water slowly down the side of the vial — never directly onto the powder. Swirl gently until fully dissolved; do not shake. Foaming can denature sensitive peptides.

2. Shelf life after reconstitution

Most reconstituted peptides remain stable for 28–30 days when refrigerated at 2–8 °C and kept out of direct light. Discard sooner if cloudiness, particulates, or color changes appear. Light-sensitive compounds such as glutathione should be wrapped or stored in opaque containers.

3. Storage temperatures

  • Lyophilized (unopened): room temperature short term, refrigerated long term.
  • Reconstituted: 2–8 °C, use within 30 days.
  • Long-term storage: −20 °C, single-use aliquots, avoid freeze/thaw cycles.

4. Safe handling checklist

  • Use sterile syringes and a fresh needle for each draw.
  • Wipe the vial stopper with an alcohol swab before every puncture.
  • Label vials with reconstitution date, concentration, and compound.
  • Keep a written log of dilution math — never estimate doses by eye.
